This card matching activity helps your child learn about the importance of signs in their environment.
- Sit with your child and take turns clicking on the cards to try to find the matching sign cards.
- While you play the game, talk about the signs. Ask your child questions like, "Have you seen this sign before?" or, "Where do you think you would see this sign?"
Playing Sign Match helps your child meet expectations of the Language area of the Ontario Kindergarten Program. It is important for children to become aware that signs in their environment convey meaning, and that this information might be important to them. It is important to have kids become aware that signs are everywhere in their environment, and that they, too, can create signs for different purposes.
This activity meets many learning expectations, one of which is:
Use reading strategies that are appropriate for beginning readers in order to make sense of a variety of written materials
- For a fun activity, go on a walk in your neighbourhood with your child and take a camera or a notebook and crayons with you. Take a picture or draw a picture of the signs you see on your walk.
- Make some fun signs for around your house! You can make one for your child's room, the washroom, your child's toy box... anything! Be creative and have fun!
