While Playing:

This Get Ready for School activity has been developed with educators and early learning experts, in order to provide you with a great tool to help you help your child make the transition to Kindergarten.

  • Explore the classroom with your child, taking turns clicking the mouse around the classroom.
  • Talk about the areas of the classroom as you "visit" them. Engage your child in conversation by saying things like, "What instrument do you like to play best?" or "When you get to make a picture in Kindergarten are you going to use paints or crayons first?"
  • Relate as much knowledge as your child has about their new classroom to the activity. For example, after explore the "Meet the Teacher" area, you can say, "Remember when we met Mrs. Monroe? She will be your teacher in Kindergarten."
Ontario Curriculum Connections:

This game meets many expectations in the Ontario Full Day Early Learning - Kindergarten program, including expectations in:

The Arts: Visual Arts and Music

Math: Geometry and Spatial Sense

Health

Personal and Social Development

Language

At-Home Activities:
  • Play school! Use your child's stuffed toys and dolls as other kids in the class. Set up a room with different centres, such as a creative centre, listening centre, book centre and block centre. Move around the room pretending to be the teacher and a student. Take turns being the teacher.
  • If you can, take a field trip to the new school. If the school is open, check out the different Kindergarten classrooms with your child, pointing out the different areas of the class. This will help your child feel less nervous for the first day of school.
  • If you can, play in the park or playground that your child will be using once he/she is in the new classroom. Getting familiar with this new environment, will help your child feel more confident.
